June 2015: £7,500 for housing help to veterans via Military Matters

June 2015: DDMT is delighted to announce a donation of £7,500 in order to continue the fantastic work done by Military Matters, whom we have helped fund previously.

CEO Moira Baynes wrote:

"Military clients now account for almost half of the Housing Options Scotland caseload. In 2014/15 they helped over 100 veterans and their families to find “The Right House, in the Right Place”.  In this last week alone we have had 11 new MM clients looking for help with their housing."

"We are finally making inroads into the prevention agenda and have attended 3 of the JSHAO Housing Briefs. I think it is fair to say we were shocked by the lack of accurate housing information offered to those about to leave the military. We have also been saddened by the unnecessary fear and anxiety that veterans experience."

Moira adds:

"Generally MM clients are more complex than mainstream clients with mental health issues, debt and the consequences of relationship breakdown being significantly higher than our other clients."

"We also find MM clients are literally harder to reach. They are sofa surfing or do not have Internet access. They are often reluctant to take our advice which means we have to adopt a more proactive approach."

Military Matters will use the donation to continue to employ, on a part time basis, "an ex Naval officer with a background in the housing association world.  Thanks to his efforts last year MM made significant strategic inroads, which support the casework service.  The remainder will be used to develop the successful HOSMates (peer support) programme."

On top of all the info MM have sent through, Robbie has heard from external sources of the great work that they have been doing. They really are making a huge difference to veterans in Scotland.
