Military Matters - Housing Support for Veterans

Donations to Military Matters: April 2013 and June 2015

March 2016: Feedback from Moyra Bayne CEO:"You came to our rescue at a very difficult time and we have been able to help over 100 veterans this year alone. This is a marvellous legacy for Dougie and we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

June 2015: DDMT is delighted to announce a further £7,500 to Military Matters, which assists soldiers with housing advice on leaving the Forces.

Since the donation the work has received praise both in a Government report and from the Army Transition Team:

"Can I say just how pleased I was with the way that the recent Housing Briefs went and the great support we received from Housing Options Scotland. I think the idea of having three speakers deliver a joint Presentation worked very well. Fraser was very, very good as a presenter and his undoubted expertise and obvious enthusiasm for the subject hit the note perfectly with the audience."

Military Matters is an organisation run under the umbrella of Housing Options Scotland, specifically to offer housing advice and help to the Veterans’ community.  Veterans often have complex problems with mental health issues and debt.  Examples of relationship breakdown are often significantly higher than in the general population but with the right help and support soldiers social reintegration does happen.

The transition from the Military to civilian life can be challenging. Finding the right house in the right place can help all the other pieces of the jigsaw - employment, schools, health care, social life, money  - fall into place.

Feedback in 2016 from CEO Moyra Bayne: "I just wanted to let you know we have been successful in raising a further £30k for Military Matters. We have been awarded £20k from the MoD Covenant to provide housing advice and information to serving families and £8k from the Scottish Government to carry out follow up research on the outcomes for our first MM clients.

If it wasn't for the generosity and support of DDMT we simply would not have been able to continue our work and none of the above would have been possible. You came to our rescue at a very difficult time and we have been able to help over 100 veterans this year alone. This is a marvellous legacy for Dougie and we all thank you from the bottom of our hearts."

For over 16 years Housing Options Scotland, a charity, has been helping disabled people and their families find suitable and affordable accommodation. Last year, with funding from Scottish Government, Poppyscotland and the Lt Dougie Dalzell MC Memorial Trust, they set up their Military Matters project  to provide free and confidential housing advice specifically for veterans and those currently serving.

We have heard that the money DDMT provided enabled Housing Options Scotland to:

  1.  Produce a short film aimed exclusively at veterans and those still serving. Filming takes place w/c 25th November at RAF Leuchars, Stirling Castle and Rosyth Naval Base. The film will be launched in early 2015 and will be available on our website and shared with partner organisations in the Veterans Scotland Housing Pillar.
  2. Embark upon a comprehensive advertising campaign with two large advertisements in Housing Matters, the JSHAO magazine (December and January issues) and an advert in the February issue of Soldier magazine.
  3. A reprint of 1000 of our special Military Matters postcards (featuring the DDMT logo)
  4. The design and print of a Military Matters pop up display banner to be used at events and road shows
  5. Extend our service to non-disabled veterans and their families. We give priority to those facing eviction from their tied accommodation."

This specialist service offered by Housing Options Scotland is led by a veteran and is part of the Veterans Scotland Housing Pillar. It offers practical help, guidance and reassurance along the path to finding the right house in the right place in Scotland. They can help a veteran and family with advice on social renting, private renting, home ownership, adaptations and what is affordable and sustainable.
